Branding is like sex.

And…

Sex is natural.

Animals do it.

Tantra celebrates it.

Evolution supports it.

Love manifests it.

Though puritans say sex is dirty…

…they’re just confused by mistranslated ancient texts.

The same way founders are confused by traditional brand advice.

(And to clear up the latter, we must first understand the former.)

So first, let’s talk about sex.

Sex fuels our greatest achievements, inspiring artists, athletes, and entrepreneurs to push the boundaries of possibility.

It’s the fire where new life is forged. An energy that connects us to the divine.

It’s the dance of creation, the rhythm of life, the spark that ignites passion.

Sex is a blessing.

And yet society’s prim gaze shames and silences sex, while the media bombards us with distorted and often violent images.

Through artistry and spectacle, the media has made torture scenes beautiful.

And through propaganda and gaslighting, it has made sex scenes cringe-worthy.

But the deepest, most natural truth is this…

Sex is beautiful.

It’s a celebration of the body, a communion of souls, a journey into pleasure.

It’s a source of joy, bliss, and profound connection.

And despite many authorities’ insistence we all avoid and condemn it…

And despite many people claiming it’s gross, or shameful, or scandalous…

And despite many businesses downplaying its value…

It’s one of the most consumed types of content on the planet.
(*Mainly in secret, though.)

People crave it, seek it, and yearn for it.

And like flowers, kittens, or sunsets…

Most people, on a soul level…

Find sex beautiful.

And…

Beauty is value.

In our patriarchal culture of productivity, we overlook the value of beauty.

We prioritize function over form, practicality over pleasure.

But the truth is…

Beauty is astoundingly precious.

Beautiful cars command huge sums.

Sublime artworks sell high.
Beachfront properties skyrocket in value.

And having beautiful women surrounding you…

…raises your own value.

And it has always been this way.

Pretty privilege is no joke.

So take a breath and make peace with this fact.

Sex is beautiful, and beauty is valuable.

And…

Value builds brands.

Any brand adding value to its interactions, is winning.

While many brands shy away from sexuality….

…the most successful ones embrace it.

They understand the power of seduction, the allure of the forbidden, the thrill of the unexpected.

Sure, sex-based brands like Playboy, Lelo, and Victoria’s Secret will openly use sexuality.

And a few daring street brands like Calvin Klein, American Apparel, and Axe may leverage sex appeal.

And even brands like Nike, Apple, and Google know that clean, sleek, sexy lines shine value out to their customers.

But most founders sleep on the value of sex.

They’re afraid of taboos.

They’re afraid of kinks.

They’re afraid of sex in general.

They’re especially afraid of what sex might do to their bottom line in the short term.

Most founders are too afraid of burning bridges with prudes, which prevents them from using the fiery value of sexuality.

This means…

  • They can’t use splash-maker marketing campaigns.
  • They can’t go viral through daring copy or headlines.
  • They can’t even use refined, sexy designs in their offerings.

Most founders are crippled by their fear of sex.

Their hands are tied by fear of beauty, seduction, and scandal.

Not just in dating or intimate relationships, but in business.

A bit of playfulness is as far as most go.

Anything “too sexy” (whatever that means), is avoided.

But…

Sex is a resource to use, not avoid.

A dash of sexiness in your branding can…

Captivate your audience by drawing them in with alluring visuals and suggestive language.

Evoke emotion by triggering desire, excitement, and passion.

Build a loyal following of devoted superfans.

Drive sales by boosting conversions and revenue.

But most founders are blind to it.

They don’t realize that we’re living in an attention-economy.

They don’t realize that “showing skin” –literally and figuratively– is a powerful and valuable path to the market exposure, reach, and impact they want.

They don’t realize that, like anything powerful, edgy, or controversial…

Sex just has to be handled with care.

But hopefully you’re smarter than most founders.

Hopefully you see the value of sex.

If so, ask yourself…

“Have I been playing small?”

“Is it time to step up?”

“Is now the time to sexify my brand?”

And don’t worry.

I’m not suggesting we turn the world into a brothel.

Not everything’s meant to be sexified.

There’s a time and a place for everything.

And a sexy brand doesn’t have to be lewd.

(But it also can’t be a prude.)

Because that’s a recipe for bland, uninspired, brand stagnation.

And in a world full of timid, scared brands, the boldest one wins.

So all you gotta do is be a bit sexier than your competition.

How?

A sexy brand dares.

When the internet was filled with “portal pages,” like Yahoo Search, spammed with links…

…Google chose the scandalous move of investing in tons of white space and a single search bar.

A sexy brand seduces.

When the car market was full of “boxes on wheels…”

…Ferrari chose to design impractical two-seaters, low to the ground, based off the feminine form.

A sexy brand creates experiences.

When drinks were fighting over taste-tests…

…Red Bull chose to sponsor skydives from space.

These megabrands don’t dominate through repressed risk-aversion or avoiding controversy.

They win through ‘scandalous’ and sexy AF choices, compared to their competition.

They refuse to submit to the status quo of what’s appropriate.

And they embrace the hate, controversy, and backlash from the prudes of the world too.

Good sex leverages build-up.

Good sex sparks connection.

Good sex leaves fans satisfied.

Good brands do the same.

So…

The question is…

Is your brand sexy enough?

"A brand for a company is like a reputation for a person. You earn reputation by trying to do hard things well."
